PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The French Shore Historical Society (FSHS – www.frenchshore.com) is seeking an intern to help launch the French Shore Tapestry Grand Opening.  The FSHS was founded in 2000, to preserve and project the cultural and natural history of this area.  The organization represents four communities on the east side of the northern peninsula – Conche, Croque, Grandoise and Main Brook.  About 4 years ago, the FHSH took on the task of creating a tapestry, similar to the Bayeux tapestry in France.  The result is a brilliant and telling tapestry of 217-feet long, which will be officially unveiled on July 27, 2010.

The intern’s role will be to provide bilingual interpretation of the French Shore Tapestry and events surrounding the exhibit, catering to both English and French visitors.  The intern will give bilingual tours of the Tapestry, provide translation services at events planned by the FSHS, and keep a record of the number of visitors to the Interpretation Centre.

HOURS: The intern may generally work Monday-Friday, from 9-5; however, there may be some variations based on special events.  The intern will work no more than 35 hours per week.

QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate should have a strong interest in the arts, cultural heritage and in its role in community development as well as an academic background in art history, tourism or a related field within the social sciences.  We are seeking a candidate who is fluently bilingual in English and French(both written and oral).  The successful applicant will be an outgoing individual with excellent communication skills and an interest in tourism and/or heritage interpretation. These qualities should be complemented by a strong capacity to work collaboratively and to share and generate creativity as part of a team.

STIPEND AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: This 6-week position is funded through the Young Canada Works program, at a rate of $10/hour.  In order to be considered, candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 30, and must be returning to school the following year.
