Ecological inventory, Downeast Lakes Land Trust

Location:  Grand Lake Stream, Maine

Dates: May/June- August, 10-12 weeks

 

Project Description:

The Downeast Lakes Land Trust (DLLT) mission is to contribute to the long-term economic and environmental well-being of the Downeast Lakes region through the conservation and exemplary management of its forests and waters. DLLT is committed to forging links between forest land conservation, economic opportunities and the well-being of communities in the Downeast Lakes region. The land trust acquired the 27,000-acre Farm Cove Community Forest in 2005.  DLLT is currently working to acquire the Wabassus Lake Tract, an important 6600 acre property on the Machias and St. Croix River watershed boundary that will be an addition to the Farm Cove Community Forest.

 

The intern will conduct an ecological inventory of the 6600 acre tract of land, produce a report on the inventory, and work with a DLLT forester to mark the boundaries of the ecological reserve on the Farm Cove Community Forest.

 

The intern will work both independently and in collaboration with QLF staff, DLLT staff, Board members and members of DLLT committees.

 

This is an excellent internship opportunity for an intern with a strong background in conservation, forestry, field ecology and community and natural resource planning.  It will provide valuable field experience, independent project work, an opportunity to explore the complexity of conservation, and will prepare an intern for further work in the field of community-based conservation. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

This position requires knowledge and field experience of ecological inventorying. Of particular interest will be candidates with the following skills/experience:

á       Identifying/mapping plant communities and wetlands

á       Field experience using GPS

á       Forestry experience / Forest stand mapping

á       Familiarity with GIS

Important to the position is an ability to work independently, an interest in field work, and excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
