EAST GRAND WATERSHED INITIATIVE COMMUNITY OUTREACH INTERNS

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Woodie Wheaton Land Trust (WWLT) is a community-based organization conserving the land and waters of the Chiputneticook chain of lakes, an international waterway located on the Maine / New Brunswick border.

 

Two successful candidates will work with the land trust to implement community outreach strategies, developing support for an initiative to conserve undeveloped lands on East Grand, Brackett, Deering, and North lakes. These positions are located in northern Maine and are funded by the Quebec-Labrador Foundation, L.L. Bean, and the Woodie Wheaton Land Trust.

 

JOB DUTIES:

With co-intern, visit lake front cottage owners via canoe and foot. Initiate and encourage dialog regarding local land conservation. Administer short questionnaire to determine local conservation priorities, gauge interest in future projects and conservation methods, including community forestry. Recruit initiative volunteers and membership. Hands-on training will be provided by WWLT Executive Director.

 

Assist in preparing, implementing, and staffing summer conservation outreach events, including local festivals, conservation rally, and WWLT annual meeting. Assist in updating database of lake front cottage owners and other local stakeholders for future outreach efforts.

 

With co-intern synthesize outreach findings and accomplishments in a final report with recommendations for next steps to further initiative goals.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and interest in land conservation and land trusts. Enjoys meeting new people and skilled in face-to-face communications. Proficient with spread sheets, word processing, and email. GIS and computer graphics experience is a plus. Self-motivated. Prefer current or recent graduate student in Environmental Studies, Public Policy, or Environmental / Community Planning. Strong writing skills.

 

Valid drivers license and vehicle. Birth Certificate or Passport. Ability to paddle a canoe and operate small boats and outboard motors.

 

COMPENSATION:

Weekly work schedule of 40 hours TBD, some weekend work required. Housing allowance of $1,100 and $500 food allowance provided, for ten week term. We will assist by providing a list of housing alternatives within cost allowance which interns may choose from. Intern compensation is a $2,000 for the ten week term.
