Position Code #: COMMAP2
QLF COMMUNITY MAPPING INTERN

Atlantic Region of Canada or the U.S.

QLF's community-based mapping initiatives respond to the global need for making digital mapping technologies, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS), more adaptable to use by, and input from, rural communities. When these technologies are oriented to local uses with members of the community, experience has demonstrated their capacity to foster civic participation, environmental awareness and learning, community-based conservation, and stewardship.

The overarching aim of QLF's Community Mapping and Participatory GIS Program is to build and sustain technical mapping capacity within rural communities by improving local access to spatial technologies and by promoting active community involvement in mapping projects. We provide technical support and sponsor youth mapping activities to a range of local organizations, non-profits and schools.

Intern responsibilities would include:

-        Working with other staff and interns to integrate GPS/GIS activities into QLF's environmental youth camps.

-        Developing a manual of map-related activities for use in the classroom, camps and teacher trainings.

-        Providing technical mapping support to other community mapping projects (such as marine mammal, cultural heritage and tourism projects).

-        Promoting "geocaching" as a new tourism product for the region.

-        Identifying and assembling GIS base data for the Straits region for use on future projects.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated person wishing to further develop their communications and technical skills and aiming to learn about the power of community mapping as a tool for local conservation and capacity building. It is an excellent point of departure for a career in community-based conservation or in mapping.

Approximate dates: June – mid August.  In the office, interns usually work from 9 am to 5 pm with about an hour for lunch.  Some evenings and weekends may be necessary.
