Position Code #: ENVED1
SCIENCE CAMP INSTRUCTOR – LEAD COUNSELOR

Locations:  Chevery, La Tabatiere, St. Augustine, St. Paul’s River and Blanc-Sablon on the Quebec Lower North Shore

Employment Dates:  09 June - 15 August 2008 (35 hours for 10 weeks)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:  The Quebec-Labrador Foundation (QLF), in collaboration with the Coasters Association and a number of community partners, is looking for a dynamic person to lead one of five Science youth day camps on the Lower North Shore – a very remote and beautiful region in the province of Quebec.

The need to increase scientific literacy of youth in this region has been identified by educational institutions and local organizations.  This first time science camp will offer youth the opportunity to learn about the significant environmental resources in their local area through direct observation, data collection and hands on experiences.  The program is designed to be fun, encourage teamwork, promote enthusiasm for exploring new things and inspire stewardship of the local environment.  Science Camp staff will organize a wide range of science and technology, nature and adventure and sports and craft activities for youth aged from 5 to 14 years of age.

This position represents an excellent opportunity for an emerging professional in the field of education, environmental education, or community-based conservation to develop program management skills. It offers a point of departure for a student or recent graduate eager to add to his or her skills with children by managing a small team of staff and volunteers and to coordinate the overall functioning of a camp. In addition, it is a fascinating opportunity to visit a stunning and little-known part of Canada, to explore its rich and unique culture, and to meet the real needs of a unique rural community.

QUALIFICATIONS:   Candidates for this position should have a background in environmental science, science, education or a related field of study.  In addition, the intern must be self-motivated, responsible, organized, and able to work both independently and in collaboration with others.  Candidates must possess excellent leadership qualities, including exceptional communication and group facilitation skills, creativity, adaptability, and sound judgment.  Past experience working in a youth camp, first aid training, and outdoor sport skills area considered important assets.  Enthusiasm, open-mindedness and enjoyment working with youth are a must.               * Priority will be given to qualified applicants from the Quebec Lower North Shore region.

STIPEND AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:  Stipend / hourly rate of pay will depend on funding as well as qualifications and background of the successful applicant.  On-site housing and travel to the work location will be covered if the successful applicant is from outside the region.  Applications are due by April 18, 2008 but are accepted on a rolling basis, so it is in your advantage to apply earlier.

Please apply online at www.qlf.org/employment.html  Only those applicants considered qualified will be contacted for an interview.
