CULTURE AND CONSERVATION INTERNSHIP - we are no longer accepting applications for this position
Position Code: CULTCON1
Location: Montréal, Québec
Mid-September, 2008 - March 2009
Project Description:
The Quebec-Labrador Foundation (QLF) exists to support the rural communities of Eastern Canada and to create model for stewardship of natural and cultural heritage that can be applied worldwide. QLF is currently initiating an oral history and sustainable tourism development project in Eastern Quebec that will involve preserving the history of the seal fishery. As opposed to the seal hunt, the seal fishery is a historic practice that involved setting nets and family fishing grounds. Many residents of tiny fishing villages on Quebec’s remote Lower North Shore are interested in preserving and transmitting the memory of the seal fishery now that it is no longer practiced. The Quebec Lower North Shore once depended on various fisheries which have closed due to depletion of the stocks. Creative, intergenerational, community-based initiatives could help rebuild the local economy and social structure.
QLF is also undertaking a business plan to put in place a national foundation supporting river conservation by community groups, particularly along Canada’s designated heritage rivers. The foundation will encourage monitoring, education, preservation and other important activities along Canada’s key rivers.
Main tasks for the Culture and Conservation Intern:
· Based in QLF’s Montreal office, assist with project coordination for both initiatives
· Conduct background research and writing for the business plan for the future river conservation foundation.
· Facilitate a school oral history gathering project related to the seal fishery
· Research aspects of the historic seal fishery
· Develop interpretation panels, publications and a podcast about the historic seal fishery.
· Assist with the development of tourism strategies for the region
· Assist with other QLF initiatives related to culture and conservation
· As needed, assist with the ongoing functions of the QLF headquarters in Montreal
This is an excellent internship opportunity for an intern with a strong interdisciplinary background in liberal arts, environmental studies, history, geography or related fields, and wishing to explore their potential in relation to sustainable community development. It will provide experience in the practical aspects of heritage and conservation and their application to community-based initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be resourceful and adaptable, highly organized, work well independently or as a team, and be fluent in English. Spoken and written French is an asset.
