Old Fashioned "Times"

In addition to music, many of the old fashioned “times” involved food, crafts, skits, and traditional games. When skits were performed, residents often referred to the event as a “concert,” which was sometimes held as a fundraiser for a special cause. People of all ages came together to perform skits and recite poems, which were often followed by music and square dancing. It was an opportunity for the community at large to meet and socialize – a testament to the closeness of the residents and the ability to create their own fun.
As these traditional events slowly cease to exist, the TSN program worked with residents to host an “old fashioned time” that spanned over two days. On the first day, local school children, along with community volunteers and Canadian Rangers, participated in a variety of traditional outdoor games and activities. On day two, residents hosted a traditional craft exhibit, more outdoor activities and a regional old time supper by the light of oil lanterns. Residents of all ages also performed skits, music and participated in a square dance.
