Perhaps at some point during the Half Century Campaign there will be an opportunity for us old QLF alums to express our appreciation to Rev. Bryan for all he has done over the past 50+ years for this remarkable organization.
I’ve been practicing appellate law at the U.S. Dept. of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division, for about four and a half years now. If this background may be of use to QLF in a volunteer capacity, please let me know.

I moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1989 and have been fairly well-settled in the rain forest on the south Olympic Coast. For most of the last 18 years, I have done well as a wine professional. I've enjoyed modest success and recognition as a sommelier and restauranteur. I had always wanted to continue working in conservation, but there were virtually no such opportunities when we moved here in 1993. Serendipity seems to have worked magic, however, because just when I decided to start looking for a job, a new salmon recovery organization advertised for its second staff person.
Our purpose is to coordinate and facilitate funding of salmon recovery and protection projects in the state's coastal wetlands. Imgine my surprise when reading your Annual Appeal that Rosemary Furfey has been elected to the QLF Board.
I've also been in touch with Ken Hoffman. He has always been an important role model to me, and I am delighted that he even rembered who I am. He's been very helpful to me as I begin to steer our organization into a formal structure. I will be working with the watershed coordinators to bring a regional perspective to their work and to keep the region focused on the important work being done in the field.

Bill has launched a very exciting initiative that's really taken hold this year. From his work on “agro-tourism”, he connected with a basic issue confronting our society – the gap between urban and rural societies and how the gap must be bridged to build sustainable agricultural and food systems. I finished my Masters in education this summer from Central Michigan University. They run a satellite program in Ontario, and I was able to do it here in Barrie (1 hour north of Toronto) at Georgian College. I also work part time at this post secondary institution as a learning strategist and faculty member. I teach biology and critical thinking in the pre-health program. Otherwise, life is good, the sun is shining, and I am keeping out of trouble.

I’m approaching one year in a new job in Boston. We mediate – or try to – among various stakeholder groups to reduce environmental impacts from various consumer products. Instead of Palestinians and Israelis, I now have pharmaceutical companies and wastewater treatment plant managers on my hands (my projects are pharmaceuticals, fluorescent lamps, and medical sharps). A fascinating whole new world, but building on my interests and skills begun in QLF days. Otherwise, I am doing a little work on the side for the Consensus Building Institute – another connection harkening back to QLF days. Life is good, Bruce and I bought a little condo in Somerville.

I completed several Salmon recovery plans this year in my position with NOAA. I am thrilled with Obama's appointment of Oregon State University marine biologist Dr. Jane Lubchenko to head NOAA. Imagine that, a preeminent scientist with stellar credentials on global warming to head one of country’s most important science agencies! I was asked to sit on the board of QLF for which I worked when first back from the Peace Corps. I helped facilitate QLF’s workshop for Middle East Fellows in Turkey in early fall.

I am currently working as an Instructional Designer and Technology Consultant at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in addition to teaching courses for UW-Stout’s School of Education while completing my doctoral degree. I am also leading a group of individuals from several UW-System schools, Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, and the Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Michigan, to develop a battery of “blended” (face to face and online) courses specifically for Somalian refugees – recent high school graduates – to prepare them for higher education in advance of the experience. To boot, I am at the end of conducting a year-long, formal program evaluation of a professional development conference for K-12 educators.

Thanks for QLF’s impressive 50 year review. As you have seen, I am now heading the Quebec Region for the Nature Conservancy of Canada. After over a decade looking after the development of an integrated network of protected areas on public lands, it is a great opportunity to now concentrate my work on protecting natural areas on private lands. And by doing so, making real hard core on-the ground acquisitions.
